‎ROME, ITALY — Alex Eala secured the next round of the Italian Open after she upset Poland’s Magdalena Frech, established 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, on Wednesday, May 6 (Philippine time) at the Foro Italico.

‎Eala overwhelmed the opening set with aggressive returns and steady baseline control, handing a 6–0 ‘bagel’ against Frech.

‎Frech came back in the second set, taking advantage of Eala’s errors to level the match at one set apiece, 6-3.

‎Filipina tennis star regained control and pace in the deciding set, winning crucial rallies and holding serve in key moments to secure the victory.

‎The success marked Eala’s first main-draw victory in the Italian Open and added another strong result to her 2026 campaign.

The Italian Open, a WTA 1000 clay-court tournament and one of the key lead-up events to the French Open, is a significant preparation event for players on the surface ahead of the year’s second Grand Slam.

‎Eala, currently the highest-ranked Filipina tennis player in history, continues to build momentum on the international stage with steady performances against higher-ranked opponents.
