The Odyssey's Ingenuity

The Odyssey (2026), an epic action fantasy film made by Christopher Nolan, is an adaptation of one of Homer's ancient Greek epic poems (The Odyssey). It is one of the films shot entirely on IMAX.

The original Greek poem by Homer follows the heroic king of Ithaca, Odysseus, also known by the Latin variant as Ulysses, and his journey home following the ten-year-long Trojan War. His journey from Troy to Ithaca adds ten more years to his journey, during which he finds many perils and all of his crewmates die.

The ensemble cast of The Odyssey is made up of Matt Damon (Odysseus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope A.K.A Odysseus' wife), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Zendaya (Athena), Robert Pattinson (Antinous), Lupita Nyong'o (Clytemnestra), Samantha Morton (Circe), and Ryan Hurst (Mentor).

The scenes in The Odyssey were all filmed in real locations, across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. The film used a sixty-foot puppet for the Cyclops so actors could visualize it — the whole cavern scene was filmed in Nestor's Cave, Greece. The IMAX camera used a whopping 2.1 million feet of film, which would be longer than the distance from Toronto to New York (790 km), and to cut the film, they would've done it by punching it in.

The Odyssey has grossed $282.5 million worldwide as of now, including from North America a total of $124.5 million. It was released in the US on July 17, 2026 — would you watch it in theaters?
