Tears Without Growth: Why Honey Lemon Soda Feels Stuck

I wanted to love Honey Lemon Soda. It promised a story about finding confidence and growing into yourself, but what I saw instead was the same pattern, over and over again. Uka is a girl who could be so strong, yet almost every moment, every small interaction, leaves her in tears.

She cries when someone speaks to her. She cries when Kai is kind. She cries when she worries she isn't good enough. And the saddest part is: she never seems to move past it. Time passes, and she is still the same waiting, worrying, weeping, but rarely stepping forward on her own. It stops feeling like vulnerability and starts feeling like there is no real progress at all.

This is where the story feels unfulfilling. It raises a quiet question: is confidence something someone gives you, or something you build within yourself? Uka does not truly find her own voice; she finds someone patient enough to wait while she struggles. That is not growth that is being carried. And that feels far more lonely than inspiring. Instead of showing her learning to stand brave on her own, it shows her being rescued. Instead of discovering she is enough just as she is, she seems to believe she is only okay because someone else says so.

The story asks us to celebrate her being seen but never fully shows her learning to see herself. The tears do not feel like a step forward; they feel like a wall she never quite climbs over.

In the end, Honey Lemon Soda leaves me wishing it had trusted Uka more. It gives her kindness and love, yet never truly gives her the chance to stand on her own. It tells us being noticed is beautiful, but it forgets to show us that the most important person to believe in you is you. That is the part I kept hoping to see, and sadly, it never truly came.
