Invisible Flow in a Digital World: Silent Drains of Streams Behind Screens

“Would you like to add more?” Whoosh, whoosh—A phrase each individual is familiar with. Day by day, artificial intelligence improves; humane intelligence deteriorates. While AI technology strengthens, bodies of nature slowly melt away.

Who are you? Who am AI? Every human being knows artificial intelligence; everyone uses AI—artificial technology holds a vital role in our everyday life, AI brings us to different ideas, lets us explore new vocabularies, and is a buddy in work, and even in school.

However, artificial intelligence also thirsts—according to Ardion (a USA-based website about artificial intelligence), AI consumes water through cooling its machines; approximately 25% of the water is used, given that computers tend to heat up. Behind the AI search engines lies a hidden stream of water. Supporting energy production also consumes water, as estimated 67% through data centers powered by electricity.

AI water consumption continues to be a threat in the future—through consumption, bodies of nature do not just disappear, habitats of wildlife may also vanish, and lead to extinction. Nature does not need humans; humans need nature. Now, how can we maintain sustainability? AI continuously grows, so does its footprint in the world.

Drip. Drop. Drip.

Nonetheless, professionals and scientists strive to find a more efficient way to cool machines and preserve energy production to help maintain sustainability in the near future. AI water consumption serves as an insight to think before you prompt.
