Power Was Given, Responsibilities Questioned

‎A historic crossroads has come to the nation as Vice President Sara Duterte finds herself at the center of a legal problem over confidential money. This is the second time the second-in-command has stood before the Senate for a crucial impeachment trial.

‎Some issues revolving around VP Sara Duterte have been abuse of power and violation of the people’s trust due to misuse of money. The articles of impeachment have been officially approved by the House of Representatives. It was the first time that the representatives had voted to impeach a second-in-command official to stand trial in the Senate

‎It is only appropriate that the Supreme Court of the Republic holds the power to review and determine whether such an accusation is enough to remove a person from office, given that they serve at the pleasure of the people. The charges against the Second in Command are of a nature that requires a formal answer before the court.

‎This is a moment for the Senate. In a show of independence, it must rise to the occasion and ensure that charges against a highly popular figure are thoroughly examined. In addition, the senators must remain objective in their deliberations, weighing the charges on their merits.

‎The gravity of the situation requires that the trial be conducted with all process and decorum so that it serves as a model for future proceedings. The integrity of the Senate and the Republic depends on it. The Filipino people expect nothing less.

‎It will have political repercussions. The family of the President of the Republic of the Philippines continues to occupy a position in Philippine society. The Vice President is one of the popular politicians in the country. A finding of guilt would have political ramifications long after the 2028 elections. On the other hand, her innocence would undoubtedly weaken the credibility of government officials in general.

‎It is not enough for the people to demand that the trial be conducted with process and dignity. In the environment, there is a perversion of this ideal that must be countered by responsible citizens. In addition to calling for a trial, people must push for transparency so that the facts come out in the open. Everyone must refrain from believing propaganda and reacting impulsively to reports about the case. This episode has implications beyond the individual on trial, as it serves as a warning to all public officials that they cannot act with impunity.

‎The confidence of the people is the responsibility of the State. They should never take it for granted. By subjecting the most powerful officials to criticism, the trial serves as a sober lesson and a warning to all who hold public office. More so, because they have the authority to use public resources at their discretion and to a far greater extent than any other official, their accountability to the people must be absolute.
