Sunshine in the Storm

Rain often arrives in the Philippines with a little bit of warning. Sometimes, the sun shone brightly above the busy streets, but the next, dark clouds and rain poured over the streets. Sidewalks were flooded, and lots of umbrellas bloomed across the road like a flower. For Filipinos, rain is more than a change in weather; it's somehow a test of adaptation.

Each year, they face challenges brought by the unexpected heavy storms; students walk through flooded streets in order to attend their classes, while workers leave home early so that they avoid traffic caused by the rain. Farmers were just watching the skies with a little bit of concern and hope, while vendors covered their products to avoid getting wet.

But even with these difficulties, resilience can still be seen. Despite students who continue walking with soaked shoes, neighbors are helping each other move stuff away from the rising water. These scenes may seem normal, yet they reveal the determination that is shown in Filipino communities.

Resilience shouldn't be understood as just an ability to pass hardship. It's an ability to cooperate and find ways to keep moving forward even though we're in the middle of a crisis. During these seasons, resilience can be seen even with small acts of solidarity that sometimes no one notices.

Storms may disrupt our routines, but it shows that even when they were beneath the umbrellas, and going to crowded waiting sheds are actually stories of those people who continue moving forward. As dark clouds stretch across the country, they remind us that resilience is not only found in dramatic moments. But sometimes, it can also be found in the simple decision we created to keep going, one rainy day at a time.
