WHO Agency Classifies Processed Meats as Cancer-Causing

Processed meats such as ham, bacon, salami, and frankfurters were classified as Group 1 Carcinogens last May 17, 2026, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, after extensive scientific studies worldwide found strong evidence linking regular consumption to cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.

The agency said the classification was based on scientific studies conducted across different populations. Researchers found that people who frequently consume processed meats may face a higher risk of developing certain cancers.

Experts explained that preservation methods such as smoking, curing, salting, and adding preservatives like nitrites may produce harmful compounds linked to cancer risk. Some studies also connected high processed-meat intake to stomach cancer.

Researchers clarified that the classification reflects the strength of scientific evidence and not the exact level of danger. They added that moderate intake does not automatically cause cancer, but long-term eating habits may influence overall health risks.

Nutrition experts encourage balanced diets that include fresh and minimally processed foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Regular exercise and healthy lifestyle habits were also recommended to help lower cancer risks and improve well-being.
