Why Political Education Matters

In every election in the Philippines, Filipinos are called to make decisions that will shape the future. However, lots of voters vote with limited knowledge only, should political education be stronger in Schools?

Political education is often misunderstood as teaching students which politicians to support. Yet in reality, the purpose is exactly the opposite. This education helps every student to think clearly about the issues that is happening in our country, and to choose the right politician.

Social media has made political education more important; Filipinos are now exposed to a constant stream of political content, including legitimate reports and misinformation. Without the skill to analyze those, many were easily fooled by misleading narratives. Schools must have a responsibility to help students distinguish whether it's real or not. Strengthening this will make voters to think critically; this will prevent young voters to go in a wrong path, and sharpening their minds can lead us to a successful future.

Critics debate that political education becomes a bridge to bias; this concern shouldn't be ignored. But the solution is not to avoid political education; it is about ensuring that it will remain balanced, factual, and grounded in democratic principles.

Democracy doesn't begin and end on election day; it depends on Filipinos who understand their rights. If the future of democracy stays in the hands of youth, then investing in political education is not an educational reform– it's an investment for the future.
