Health authorities are closely monitoring 38 crew members on a cruise ship after a suspected case of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome was reported. The ship MV Hondius remains off Cape Verde on May 4. According to the Department of Health (DOH), the affected individual showed symptoms consistent with Hantavirus infection.

Hantavirus is transmitted through exposure to infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. The rest of the crew are currently under observation to ensure that no additional cases develop.

Health officials are taking extra precautions due to the ship's enclosed environment, where contamination may spread more easily if rodents are present.

Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, and fatigue. These may progress into severe breathing difficulties, making the illness potentially life-threatening if not treated immediately.

Authorities are also investigating the vessel to identify possible sources of exposure, including checking for signs of rodent infestation.

Sanitation and disinfection procedures are being carried out to reduce health risks.

The public is advised to remain calm but vigilant and to maintain cleanliness while avoiding contact with materials that may be contaminated by rodents.
