PHIVOLCS Reports Activity in 4 Volcanoes

Monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on May 26, 2026, Taal Volcano in Batangas, Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon, Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island, and Mayon Volcano in Albay showed continued volcanic activity based on the agency’s 24-hour observation reports released at 12:00 a.m. Volcanic earthquakes, ash emissions, lava flow, sulfur dioxide release, and ground deformation were recorded in the four volcanoes.

First, Taal Volcano remained under Alert Level 1 after the PHIVOLCS recorded 21 volcanic earthquakes, including 10 volcanic tremors. In addition, weak steaming activity and sulfur dioxide emissions reaching 1,314 tons per day were observed. According to the PHIVOLCS, these signs show continued movement beneath the volcano.

Meanwhile, Bulusan Volcano also stayed under Alert Level 1 with 21 volcanic earthquakes recorded within 24 hours. A 100-meter steam plume and sulfur dioxide emission of 109 tons per day were monitored as well. Because of the ongoing activity, the PHIVOLCS warned that steam-driven eruptions may still happen if unrest increases further.

On the other hand, Kanlaon Volcano remained under Alert Level 2 after six ash emission events, 33 volcanic earthquakes, and five volcanic tremors were recorded. Moreover, the volcano produced a 400-meter steam plume and released 1,316 tons of sulfur dioxide per day. The PHIVOLCS explained that the increased activity suggests ongoing magma movement beneath the volcano.

Lastly, Mayon Volcano stayed under Alert Level 3 due to continuous lava flow in the Basud, Bonga, and Mi-isi gullies. Aside from this, the PHIVOLCS recorded 57 volcanic earthquakes, 286 rockfall events, and eight pyroclastic density current signals. The agency said these signs indicate active magma movement that may lead to hazardous eruptions.

Therefore, the PHIVOLCS advised residents near the volcanoes to remain alert and follow safety measures, as volcanic activity may change at any time.
