A crowd gathers; farmers stand beside their carabao. There is anticipation, but also something quieter– devotion.

On May 14 in Pulilan, Bulacan, carabaos approach San Isidro Labrador Parish Church one by one. Animals known for their strength in fields bend their front legs and lower themselves to the ground.

Carabaos kneel.

A moment that draws silence from the crowd– a stillness in a festival full of colors and movement. Cameras are showing, but behind all those lenses, there is a hesitation, as if people recognize that what unfolds is more than a centerpiece of the celebrations.

The Kneeling Carabao Festival is held in honor of San Isidro Labrador, but the meaning stretches beyond the religious tradition.

For farmers, the act is deeply personal.

A lot of years working with these animals, relying on them to plow fields under the sun, through mud that sticks to them. This day becomes a gesture of gratitude to them.

They are not just animals but companions to survive.

The preparation begins with the carabaos, decorated with their horns painted and their bodies adorned. Farmers guided them with care, teaching them movements they would perform. A tradition that is passed down not only in words but also through touch and patience.

Yet, behind the celebration lies the reality of the farmer's life.

Agriculture in the Philippines remains vulnerable to changes in weather, rising costs, and uncertain harvests. For farmers, each season takes risks. The festival is not only for appreciation of what they received but also a prayer for what's still uncertain. The image of the kneeling carabao has a heavier meaning.

A resilience shaped by years of labor. And a faith– not just in divine intervention, but in an enduring relationship between land, farmer, and animal.

As the last carabao bows and rises, the crowd exhales, noise returns, and the festival continues. Yet the image remains: a creature built for strength is now choosing to bow.

—devotion.

In Pulilan, single acts tell stories that words often fail to capture– it tells us that even the strongest among us must kneel.
